Holst – Planets – Jupiter Sequence 1

This sequence comes from Gustav Holst’s orchestral suite The Planets, specifically the end of the 4th movement “Jupiter: The Bringer of Jollity”

This moment kicks of the final push to the end of the movement, and presents a wonderful phrasing/breathing/sound challenge. Strive to maintain your intensity all the way through the last note, and use some subtle phrasing to hide your breaths wherever you choose to take them. Bass trombonists, be sure to fill in the middle of your sound because the tuba will provide plenty of body.

When done well, this sequence will improve the sound of your low register, your legato connections, and your phrasing.

Happy Practicing!
