This sequence focuses on a chromatic fanfare that the trombones and trumpets play in the second movement of Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov‘s Scheherazade. This orchestral work is a shimmering masterpiece that is full of life, spinning tales of the sea, princes, and a big festival while showcasing each instrument group in the orchestra. RK is known as an incredible orchestrator, he literally wrote THE book on it that is still used today, and he flexes his orchestration chops throughout the piece by choosing instrument combinations that bring the melodies and harmonies to life.
As you play, sing out confidently like someone riding into battle. Make sure each note starts with its own clean “Tah” articulation. Fortify your rhythm by practicing slowly and without the tie so you can feel a clear difference between 16th notes and triplets.
Pay close attention to your sound and articulations as you progress through the sequence. Where is your sound the most vibrant? Where are your articulations the most ping-y? Use your best to inspire and inform your worst.
